Birch Extension Case Study
The Brief:

As was the case when we were approached by the owner of a 2-bed home in the picturesque village of Birch, just a few miles outside of Colchester. The client wanted to extend their property to create enough additional space to offer a brand-new bedroom, an additional bathroom, a new study, plus increased living space and a larger kitchen.
The client was also keen for their home extension to be more eco-friendly, which has become an ever more common request in the house extensions Colchester has seen in the last few years. The Solution:
To create the space needed to meet the clients’ needs we decided on a wrap-around extension at the rear of the property, consisting of a single-story extension on one side and a double-story extension on the other side. Both extensions boast underfloor heating which was designed by Continal Underfloor Heating, and also feature Velux windows throughout to maximise natural light. When installing the roof we opted for lead gulleys for water drainage, and decided on exposed oak truss beams for the interior, which we finished with LED uplighters for accent lighting.
Our team of Colchester builders also removed an external window on the original dwelling to create a walkthrough to the new extension. To offer a more eco-friendly approach to heating we built a chimney stack with flue for a log burner that features in the new living space. We also included a separate cupboard area to house the underfloor heating manifolds and water heaters, as well as the control systems for the air source heat pump system (another more eco-friendly heating system). The Outcome:
The completed double-story extension created the space for the new bedroom on the first floor, featuring a high vaulted ceiling with Velux windows on both sides, finished with a Juliet balcony overlooking the garden. On the ground floor, the extension offered a new study, an additional family bathroom, plus increased kitchen and living space. The project ran smoothly and our team of skilled Colchester builders perfectly married the existing older structure to the new extension.
